Stray shunt capacitance is computed and for a given resonant frequ-> -ency, the setting of the variable tuning capacitor is shown.O Receiving sensitivity with respect to a highly efficient antenna such as a 1/4O -wave vertical is shown in decibels. Impedance across the tuned loop at reson-N -ance is computed. This will be of interest when connecting the loop directlyO to the input of an FET head-amplifier. The lower impedance presented to the RxO input by a single turn of wire closely coupled to the main loop is also given.N This single turn may be connected to the receiver via a short line, the lowerJ impedance being more closely matched to Z-input of a junction transistor.O It will be seen that loop stray capacitance increases rapidly as winding pitchO decreases for the same diameter wire. This not only limits tuning range of theO loop - it also reduces Q and efficiency. The effect is large with only two orO three close-wound turns but is very small, of course, with a single turn. How-K -ever the ratio (winding pitch)/(wire diameter) can be TOO large . . . . .$ C(ontinue) or Q(uit program) .... - FURTHER NOTESN When the width of the single-layer winding is greater than roughly 1/5 of oneO side of the frame the program becomes less accurate in calculating inductance.N But before this occurs any wide spacing has probably been overdone and a moreM efficient loop could result from fewer more closely spaced turns of heavier-I gauge wire. A reminder is displayed when the 1/5 point has been passed.L In most cases the dimensions and number of turns for operation over a givenN band of frequencies will be decided by the type, size and availability of theM tuning capacitor. HF loss due to the tuning capacitor is always negligible.N When the aerial is Z-matched to a receiver, Q and selectivity will be halved.N Computed results apply approximately to loops of other regular shapes such asO hexagons and circles which enclose the same area or have the same perimeter asO a square.
